I ended up jerry rigging my model with little cubes and booleans. Joel, It has to do with banking interpolation on a spline which has linear interpolation. I won't get into all the technie; here's a solution to just get what you want. Split the spline into 4 segments, and sweep the cross section along each one.

That way there's no banking involved at all. Hi Joel, The profile shape needs to lie on the XY axis, and it gets swept along the path in the direction of its Z axis. I never seem to get the profile in the right orientation the first time around, so I select it and free rotate it's object axis untill the sweep NURBS comes close to looking right in the editor, then I clean-up the rotation settings in the coordinates manager.

For the banking you carefully need to move the points on the rail spline. Ok, that works, now one final thing. Is there a way to now vary the width along the strip without altering the thickness?

Ok everything was going well but I have hit another unfortunate problem. The sweep won't bank from the top's perspective and is still getting a tapering effect when it is pulled from side to side. If I uncheck "Use Rail Direction" it works but then the rest of the sweep starts rotating in other crazy directions. The problem is that this will eventually be split into parts and manufactured with a CMC, so the width has to be consistant throughout.

I wouldn't it this way then. I would get one spline the right path, duplicate it then offset it. Create a LoftNurbs object using the 2 splines.

Spline tool 8m 22s.Been screwing around with a texturing technique whereby, as in reality, the corners and sharp edges of things tend to get bashed and scratched more than flat surfaces. As is probably obvious, the main way I've done this is by using a Proximal referring to itself using edges technically referring to a simpler version of the mesh, but yeahplus AO to get rid of it in recessed corners where it wouldn't happen, noise to break it up a bit, etc.

I've been trying to work out what to do about this. First I wondered if Proximal could refer only to an edge selection can't work out howthen possibly phong breaks, then an angle limit. I'm out of ideas. An edge selection seems the most likely but yeah, damned if I can work out how. If anyone cares I worked out a method - edge to spline, put in a sweep with a square set to zero, make editable, use the sweep for the Proximal to refer to.

It doesn't feel like a great method though - MAXON, if you're listening, restricting a Proximal to selection in the next version would be nice.
